Only The Shadow Knows!

It was a hot night on Thursday the 21 of August. The seasons were changing and it was getting to be fall. Jessie was 18 years old and in her senior year of High School. She was home alone tonight and as usual she was talking on the phone with her good friend Nicole, at 8:30 that night.

“So what are you going to be doing this weekend? Anything fun?”

“Nah, I’m just going to be sitting around listening to my music, like I do every weekend. What about you?”

“I’m just doing the same thing as you. We really need lives, because we never do anything. To bad there aren’t any good clubs around here.”

“Yeah they shut all the good ones down.”

As Jessie was talking to Nicole she realized how hot it was. She needed to get some fresh air, so she took her cordless phone outside on her front lawn. She sat down in front of her house still talking to Nicole.

“This weekend we need to do something that we don’t usually do.” There was no answer or response from Nicole. “Nicole … are you listening to me?”

“Oh yeah, sorry I was looking for the remote.”

“Why, I thought that you never watch TV? Anyway, Do you want to do something this weekend for a change?”

“Yeah sure, why not. Hold on, I’m gonna switch phones, so I can go outside. It is so hot in this house.”

“Okay.”-----

“I’m back, It feels so good out here.”

"Yeah, I needed to get out of my house too. There’s a nice breeze tonight.” Again Nicole didn’t’ respond to Jessie. “Nicole, what are you doing now?”

“Uh, Jessie,” Nicole said in a shaky voice, “There is someone out here. I just saw a guy walk past here…. twice. He was in the shadow so I really couldn’t see who he was. But as he was passing by the house he would slow down and look towards me, like he was looking for something.”

“Don’t worry it’s probably Justin Timberlake. He’s out to get you! Wouldn’t that be scary if it was him and he pulled a gun on you and shot you?” She started to laugh about the whole idea.

“Jessie, that’s not funny. I’m going inside that’s really creepy.”

Justin and the boys are supposed to be in town that week. They are doing a live performance for channel 4 news. All the girls in their school were talking about the performance none stop for the last week. So it was hard not to know about it.

“Man you can be such a scaredy cat sometimes. I’m sure it’s just a guy going for a walk.”

“I’m not scared, if you saw this guy you wouldn’t want to be out here either. Anyway, let’s change the subject. What are we going to do this weekend? We could go play pool down at J’s club, or we could go watch a movie, I’ve been dying to see that new movie X-men! What do you think?”

“ Uh yeah… whatever. Mexican ... Sounds good.”

“What I didn’t say anything about Mexican. I really think that you need to get your hearing checked. In fact were you –“

Jessie interrupted, “Is that guy still walking around in front of your house?”

“I dunno why?”

“Oh no reason it’s just that this guy drove up in a Red truck and parked down the street. He got out of the car and he’s walking this way."

“Aww, c’mon Jessie, don’t be such a scaredy cat.” Nicole laughed silently.

“Oh Shut-up! I’m gonna go in the house.”

By this time the man was up to her driveway. Jessie turned around (toward the driveway) to head for the front door. As she was turning the man pulled out a gun and shot her just below her ribs. As she was falling to the ground the phone slipped out of her hand. She was face down on the ground, but she could sense him coming towards her. She lifted her head to see who it was. The man was wearing a black leather trench coat and a hat. As she was trying to make out the man’s face a car drove by. The headlights from the car lit up the man’s face, when she saw who the man was her eyes widened in horror. The man looked at her for a second then turned and walked back to his car. She remembered about Nicole, who was still on the phone calling out Jessie’s name. The phone had dropped a couple feet away from her. So in a lot of pain she moved herself towards the phone. She was finally able to pickup the phone.

“Nicole, please call an ambulance … quick!”

“Why, what was that loud sound? It sounded a lot like a gun shot.”

“ It was, I’ve been shot.”

“Yeah right, are you trying to play some stupid prank on me. Well it won’t work I’m not buying it so you—“

Jessie interrupted, “ I’m not kidding, the guy from the red truck shot me and I’m bleeding really bad.” By this time her hand was covered in her blood and she couldn’t stop the tears of pain from running down her face. “ Nicole, please call an ambulance.” That was the last thing she said before she blacked out.
